Previcox Emails - K911.biz
Found on this site is information and experiences from ones whose dogs are using or have used Previcox (firocoxib).
Some dogs have seemingly experienced no adverse reactions from the drug, while others have suffered serious injury, including death.
See:
Death by Previcox, Rowdy's Last Vacation
Email your Previcox experience to: mel.k911.biz@gmail.com
The common theme throughout many of these emails is, where there is a death, the attending vet not only neglected to mention any safety concerns but in some instances prior to death, suggested continuing the Previcox, claiming it was one of the "safer drugs" or blatantly stating that Previcox was not the cause of the dogs rapid decline in health. When autopsy results showed a direct correlation between Previcox and a dog’s death, some vets were still hesitant to cite Previcox as the culprit. By law, human patients are informed of the possible side effects of all drugs but this does not hold true in the world of veterinary medicine. Although the sensibleness of doing so seems abundantly clear, vital information often goes unmentioned and as a result, pets continue to die.
Note that many of the emails state: "Up until this time our dog was perfectly healthy"..."in good health"..."in the best of health"..."At vet check she was given a clean bill of health".
THE NUMBER OF DRUG RELATED DOG DEATHS MIGHT BE GREATLY REDUCED IF VETS WOULD FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES MERIAL RECOMMENDS.
PRESCRIBE THE CORRECT DOSAGE. TABLETS COME IN 57MG or 227MG. MERIAL RECOMMENDS 2.27MG PER POUND OF BODY WEIGHT. MANY DOGS HAVE BEEN OVERDOSED BY THE ATTENDING VET.
All dogs should undergo a thorough history and physical examination before the initiation of NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug) therapy. Appropriate laboratory testing to establish hematological and serum baseline data is recommended prior to and periodically during administration of any NSAID. Owners should be advised to observe for signs of potential drug toxicity (see Adverse Reactions and Animal Safety) and be given a Client Information Sheet about PREVICOX Chewable Tablets. For technical assistance or to report suspected adverse events, call 1-877-217-3543 in the US.
Why are the majority of veterinarians ignoring what the drug makers are telling them? Although Previcox is the main focus here, ALL drugs have the potential for harm and should be dispensed with proper instructions and warnings so ones do not believe one drug to be safer than another.
MONITOR YOUR DOG FOR THESE SIDE EFFECTS:
• Eats very little food or refuses to eat.
• Drinks more than the usual amount of water in a short period of time, cannot seem to drink enough water.
• Vomits, (throws up food and/or water) regularly.
• Diarrhea, (poo, feces) looks black, tarry or bloody.
• Urination (peeing) habits change. Dog needs to pee often and the color is off. The urine may smell unusual or there may be blood in the urine.
• Lethargic, no energy, lies in one spot for hours without moving.
• Agitated (restless) or uncomfortable for no reason.
• Heavy panting or breathing.
• Cannot walk properly or cannot walk without support.
• Slow to respond to commands or does not respond at all, seems unaware of surroundings.
• Seizures- legs go rigid or dog has no control over body movements.
• Gums going pale, yellow or grey.
• Whites of eyes look yellow or jaundiced.
• Skin changes may occur. Redness, scabs or intense itching followed by scratching and biting of skin. Skin may look burned as a result of a reaction to the drug.
• Loses weight in a short amount of time.
• Aggressive behaviour, tries to nip or bite.
Rather than using NSAIDS (aspirin is also an NSAID), please have a look at other options for arthritis and joint pain by clicking the following link: NSAID Alternatives
